TOPIC: Flags and the World
THEME: Social Issue
TIME: 40 minutes (1 periods)
LANGUAGE CONTENT: Vocabulary associate with flag
AIMS: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to locate specific information on the World Wide Web and transfer the information to the worksheet given.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. 2-3 students per computer
2. Internet connection
3. Web Browser
WEBSITES:
1. http://www.flagdetective.com/
2. http://www.flag-game.com/
PREPARATION:
1. Locate the ‘Flag Detective’ and ‘Guess the Nation’ websites.
2. Browse through the website to make sure it is suitable for the students and matches with the topic.
3. Prepare worksheet based on the information in the website.
PROCEDURE:
Set induction: (5 minutes)
1. Teacher shows students some pictures of flags from other country and asks the students to guess the name of the country (e.g.: Japan, England – well known country)
2. Teacher introduces the topic of the day.
Task 1: (15 minutes):
1. Teacher asks the students to form a group of 2 to 3 per computer.
2. Teacher instructs the students to open the ‘Flag Detective’ website (http://www.flagdetective.com/)
3. Teacher distributes a picture of a flag each group (each group will get different flag)
4. By using the website and hits given in the website (click on cross in the flag contains a cross on it etc) students need to identify the flag’s country
5. After the students have found the name of the country, they need to complete the worksheet given.
6. Teacher guides each group in completing the activity.
7. Each group needs to present their findings.
Task 2: (15 minutes):
1. Teacher instructs students to open the ‘Guess the Nation’ (http://www.flag-game.com/) website and together with their friends complete the game.
2. Students can refer to the ‘Flag Detective’ website
3. Teacher allocates 10minutes for this game
4. Compare their scores with their friends.
Conclusion: (5 minutes)
1. Teacher recaps the lesson on ‘Flag and the World’ by asking the students what they have learned
2. Teacher inculcates moral values.
FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITY:
Students need to complete this task
1. Imagine you are a leader of an unnamed country what would you named your country?
2. Draw your country’s flag and give each symbol and colour their definition.
* TASK 1 - Find the Nation for this flag'
* By using this website 'Flag Detective'
* Then complete this worksheet
Task 2 - 'Guess the Nation' game. Within 10 minutes try to guess the 15 flags shown

ReplyDeleteEven though,I think the second activity is a little bit difficult for intermediate students, with the help from the clues given on the screen (map, capital, continent, currency etc etc), it will help them a lot while searching and guessing for nation's name.

ReplyDeleteyour lesson is interesting. good job!however, in part of giving them a flag for each group it would rather consume time for you to distribute and prepare the flag. why dont you ask them to pick their own flag from the website. i think it is more suitable for form4 students because they can make their own choices.as for the game,wuhuuu i like it.actually i didnt know the existence of this website, thanks raihan because i will definitely use your idea!

ReplyDeleteYuha, I don't want my students to choose only the flag that they know, which is why I gave each pair a flag.. (flag yg diorg mmg x familiar) However, it is true that it would be time consuming 2 distribute the flags. Thank you for pointing that out. Since this lesson would be conducted in the computer lab, I think to reduce the time consuming, I would prepare the envelope on each table earlier before class, so that they don't have wait for me to distribute the flags. heee~

ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite lesson plans no doubt! It's definitely a cool way to improve the students' general knowledge on other countries. Plus, i can honestly say that the students may even go to the lengths of doing their own research on the the flags outside school hours. COOL!
